A New Kind of Gift Wrap:
You know that shiny, glossy gift wrap that we all grew up with? Did you know that it's basically coated in baked-on plastic? (That's why it's a big source of contamination for recycling streams.) And then, it's wrapped around a cardboard tube and wrapped in MORE PLASTIC? And then, it's often shipped from across the world? This gift wrap doesn't feel like the shiny stuff you grew up on. It's printed on premium newsprint using soy based inks, this means that you can expect a small about of smudge when you handle it (just like newspaper inks would come off a bit on your hands.) This smudge washes right off, and it's a small price to pay for this gift-wrap being 100% recyclable and backyard compostable. Newsprint is one of the most easily recyclable products (with over 73% of being recovered and recycled in the US.) Additionally, because this giftwrap comes folded and packed in sheets, we skip the cardboard tube, AND it's easy to store. (No more stashing tubes of gift-wrap in the closet or under your guest bed ;). I hope you love this product!

About the Design:
Peck and Plume is inspired by the convergence of the NC Piedmont and coastal plain. It features a male cardinal, loblolly pine, pitcher plants, thistle, black eyed Susan, milkweed, hairstreak butterflies, and English plantain. You can see a variation of this pattern as wallpaper at the Peck and Plume restaurant, located in the Mayton Inn in downtown Cary, NC. I collaborated with the Inn to create this pattern based on their location, and the amazing new park that is being built in downtown Cary! If you know anyone who was married at the Mayton, this gift wrap is a slam dunk!
About New South Pattern House:
At New South Pattern House, my priority is to deliver the most environmentally friendly and high quality products possible. In the winter of 2021, I thought it would be fun to treat my customers with a seasonal gift wrap to sell around the holidays. (In addition to being a printmaker, I frequently design repeating patterns for fabric and wallpaper, so gift-wrap seemed like a no-brainer for me.) After looking at the options, I was horrified by what I saw. I couldn't find anything that lived up to my environmental standards. Finally, I found a manufacturer that was repurposing domestic newspaper presses to make sheets of Eco-Friendly giftwrap. It took a lot of work, and intention-- sourcing ethical choices the entire way, but I'm excited to bring my place-based designs to life in this Eco-Gift Wrap that celebrates our beautiful region.
Shipping and Production:
These gift wrap sets are packaged in a clear PLA sleeve that is commercially compostable, and shipped in a flat (recyclable) mailer. The packaging tape, stickers, and even mailing label are all recyclable as well, so just toss the whole thing in the recycling after you open it :). I'm usually able to ship within 3 business days.
